Over half of Romanians disagree with Romania’s potential union with Moldova

    54% of Romanians would not back a possible union between Romania and Moldova „at a certain time, in the future”, while 31% would vote in favor of a possible referendum for union, according to the survey entitled „Unionist feeling in Romania; anticipating the future”, released on Thursday by Avangarde.

    54% of people interviewed were neutral, 31% were rather positive, 9% rather negative and 3% did not have any opinion on the matter.

    More than half of respondents (54%) do not consider that “at a certain moment, in the future, Romania should unite with Moldova,” but a third (33%) are for the union, and 13% cannot answer.

    If a referendum were organized for the union with Moldova, 31% of Romanians would vote „for”, 50% „against”, 13% would be undecided amd 6% would not answer.

    31% of Romanians consider that Moldova should „be urgently admitted to NATO”, while 40% are against it and 29% cannot or would not answer.

    In exchange, 41% of Romanians consider that Moldova should „be urgently admitted to the EU”, 30% oppose it and 29% cannot or would not answer.

    In case of Russia’s military invasion in Moldova, 29% of people interviewed think that „Romania should help Moldova with troops”, 56% do not back the idea, while 15% avoided answering. As for helping with military technology, 48% would back it, 35% would be against and 17% cannot decide.

    Regarding Moldovan president Maia Sandu, 40% of Romanians have a „good” and „very good” opinion, while 21% have a „bad” and „very bad” opinion. 36% have no opinion or do not know who Maia Sandu is, while 3% would not answer the question.

    76% of Romanians do not think Maia Sandu would be „a good option” of candidate for Romania’s presidency, 19% avoided answering and only 5% would like her to run for the supreme position in this country.

    Asked about the orientation of people in Moldova, 46% of respondents consider that half of them are „pro west” and „pro Russia”, 16% pro Russia, 14% pro west, 21% cannot appreciate and 3% did not answer.

    The survey was completed by phone over April 26 and 29th, Group of Socio-Behavioral Studies Avangarde on a national sample of 850 people.
