Péter Magyar on the “Hungarian Watergate”

At a press conference in Budapest on Sunday, Péter Magyar, Viktor Orbán’s most visible opponent as of yet, has accused Fidesz of spying on him and his staff systematically at their homes and offices, their apartments and cars bugged.

Magyar requested of Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs that the devices used for spying be removed.

Magyar claims that this private secret service is built on information regarding his private life. In a video address, he says that his ex-girlfriend recorded audio during party meetings and private discussions, which she used to blackmail the party – for 30 million HUF, or approximately 80K euros. Shortly afterward, she gave an hour-long smear interview about Magyar on a pro-government media outlet, and reportedly handed over the materials (11 hours worth of audio) in exchange for 5 million HUF per month (13000 euros) and a Budapest apartment.

Magyar in response made certain heated comments against this former girlfriend, Evelin Vogel, claiming she had been unfaithful to him and had used him during their relationship. Vogel, in turn, said that she rejected Magyar’s marriage proposal precisely because his words and actions didn’t line up from a political point of view. She has also claimed that he has been verbally violent in front of her child. Magyar says that he attempted to “protect Evelin Vogel from criminal and political consequences”, but that she continued to remain faithful to Fidesz.

In the video, Magyar also says that Fidesz has purchased an LLM model for billions of forints, which they use to generate smear campaign propaganda. He says that AI has also been used to impersonate his voice.

Tisza, Magyar’s party, is Fidesz’s greatest threat yet, currently standing at 46% in polls. Magyar has only gained popularity since February, when he broke off from Fidesz. He is the ex-husband of Judit Varga, former Minister of Justice, who resigned in protest after former PM Katalin Novak pardoned someone complicit in a child abuse case, and who he also accused of being financed by Fidesz.
