Polish premier: Moldova can fast-track to EU membership

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said Moldova’s accession to the European Union could be fast-tracked.

He made his comments on Thursday during a visit to the Moldovan capital Chisinau where he met his counterpart Dorin Recean.

„I believe an accelerated route is possible. It can either be a genuinely very fast route, or negotiations can get bogged down in lengthy discussions. I hope the European Union will open its arms to Ukraine and Moldova, “ he said.

Moldova is seeking to join the bloc amid fears it could be drawn into the conflict in neighboring Ukraine.

Moldova became an EU membership candidate in 2022 along with Ukraine in a boost to the pro-Western political ambitions of its government, which has accused Russia of trying to destabilize the country.

The former Soviet republic of 2.6 million people borders EU-member Romania and Ukraine and has Russian peacekeepers stationed in the pro-Moscow breakaway region of Transnistria.

Moldpres reported that Morawiecki said everything possible should be done for Moldova to join.

The two prime ministers signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to cooperate in cyber security.
