Private dermatology hospital opens in Romania

The new hospital also announced plans to expand with dermatology units nationwide, in the cities of Galati, Pitesti, Targoviste, Focsani and Constanta.

A new private skin hospital has opened north of the Romanian capital.

The new medical unit has state-of-the-art technology in skin cancer prevention, 32 beds, a recovery outpatient and a modern operating block, according to a press release.

More than 30 doctors will work at the hospital which cost about half a million euros.

It was developed on the basis of the pre-existing dermatological clinic and has been operational since March.

The Bioderm group which built the hospital was founded in 1992 by doctor Lucian Russu also includes the Bioderm Eminescu clinic (Bucharest) and the Bioderm clinic in Popeşti-Leordeni, and the dermatological infrastructure of the group will be expanded nationwide.

„We have the right to health! In this spirit, we open Bioderm Hospital, where we have the ability to provide services at the highest standards in the entire spectrum of dermatological conditions,” a statement said.

„We have been at the forefront of skin cancer prevention… an will continue this by opening the new hospital, soon followed by a nationwide expansion”, said Dr. Lucian Russu, dermatology-venereology specialist, founder of Bioderm.

The hospital has a Foto Finder Full Body ATBM Master, an advanced procedure that scans the entire surface of the skin, creating a detailed dermatoscopic map of moles. It gives  doctors a clear and complete picture of the patient’s skin condition and allows early detection of skin cancer, including its most aggressive form – melanoma.

„The opening of Bioderm Hospital … is another important step in the fight against skin cancer. The prevention of skin cancer and melanoma is a mission we have assumed since 20 years ago…. The new hospital responds to an unmet need for such integrated dermatological medical services, based on prevention, diagnosis and treatment.”, said Dr. Claudia Sprâncenatu, Bioderm CEO.

Cases of skin cancer have increased in recent years due to repeated exposure to the sun without sunscreen, climate change and sunbeds.

Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer: 75% of people diagnosed with metastatic melanoma die within the first year of diagnosis. However, if it is caught at an early stage, it can be curable in a proportion of 95%.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, worldwide, every hour, one person with melanoma dies, and for 2015 it was estimated that 9,940, people died as a result of this form of cancer. In Romania, almost a third of patients with this form of cancer die annually.

In the last 25 years figures have increased from 1.2 to 4.5/100,000 people diagnosed with melanoma.

The hospital also has a modern phototherapy unit, based on light at a controlled intensity to treat from acne, alopecia, couperose, rosacea, dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, etc.

Can’t we do something about Romania’s above-average cancer mortality rate?
