Romanian mountain rescuers have saved the lives of two Ukrainian men who spent days lost in the mountains on the border between Romania and Ukraine.
Romania’s Mountain Rescue Service said it located the men, aged 26 and 36, who were „lost and exhausted” neat the Ivan Pop peak. They had been wandering around for several days.
Thousands of men from Ukraine have fled across the border, often over treacherous mountain passes, to avoid being conscripted to fight in the war against Russia. An unknown number have perished on the way.
Romanian authorities are alert to crossings and the pair were located by the Maramures Special Telecommunications who conducted a search and rescue action plucked them to safety. Updates will be posted as they become available.
The Easter period was busy for mountain rescuers with a total of 17 people rescued on Sunday alone.
The National Mountain Rescue Dispatch informed said that four people they rescued the day before needed hospital treatment.
Most emergency calls came to the Neamt Mountain Rescue and Bihor Mountain Rescue. Calls were also made to the Bran, Vrancea, Bistrita-Nasaud, Predeal, and Gorj Mountain Rescue centers.
