Romania confirms 7,707 cases of coronavirus, with nearly 500 new cases reported in last day

Romanian authorities say they have confirmed 491 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, one of the highest since the outbreak began, taking to the total of confirmed cases to 7,707 cases.

The Strategic Communication Group said Thursday that 387 people had died from the virus since the outbreak began.

There are currently 243 patients receiving treatment in intensive care.

Almost 80,000 tests have been carried out, and 4,802 in the last day.

Some 1,357 patients have recovered from the virus, authorities said.

There are currently 22,866 people in institutionalized quarantine, and 60,700 people in self-isolation at home.

Romanian authorities say the virus will peak in the next two weeks, after Orthodox Easter on Sunday.

The Strategic Communication Group on Wednesday advised people to wear surgical masks and gloves when shopping, to spend as little time as possible in a shop, and to keep a distance from other people.

Some Romanian counties have made masks compulsory in public.
