Romania Covid-19 spike continues with 345 new infections, biggest rise in six weeks

The number of new coronavirus cases in Romania surged to 345 on Wednesday, the biggest daily increase in more than a month.

The Strategic Communication Group reported that more than 11,700 tests had been carried out in the last 24 hours, giving an infection rate of 2.94%.

With the latest figures, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Romania went up to 22,760.

It is the largest daily increase since May 7 when there were more than 390 cases in a single day.

Romania’s government has extended the state of alert for another month as the virus is not under control, although it has eased some of the lockdown rules, such as allowing malls to reopen and churches to resume normal worship.

With new cases remaining unpredictable, face masks are still compulsory in indoor public places and it is common for people to have their temperature taken at retail outlets and shopping malls.

 The virus death toll rose to 1,451 on Wednesday, with 14 deaths reported in the last day, all patients over 60.

The number of patients who have recovered from the virus is 16,117. Some161 patients are treated in intensive care units. 

More than 585,300 tests have been processed since testing began.

About 1,500 people are in institutionalized quarantine, and 87,600 are in isolation at home under medical supervision
