Romania doubles – or triples! – its deficit in 2024

Two months into 2024, Romania’s budget deficit increased 1.7 times from the same period last year, to RON 28.99 billion or 1.67% of GDP, from RON 17.04 billion (1.07% of GDP) in the year-ago period, shows data released on Tuesday by the Finance Ministry.

With the budget gap standing at RON 7.89 billion (0.45R of GDP) as of the end of January, it results that the deficit increased almost three times in February.

„The execution of the general consolidated budget in the first two months of 2024 ended with a deficit of RON 28.99 billion, respectively 1.67% of GDP, compared to RON 17.04 billion (1.07% of GDP) for the first two months of 2023”, states the cited source.

The budget for this year is built on a deficit narrowing to 5% of GDP, from 5.68% in 2023.
