Romania is preparing a law that would enable young people to join the Army for a few months, defense minister Ionuț Moșteanu said.

If the legislation is approved, Romanians aged between 18 and 35 will be able to sign up to the Army for a period of four months after which they will remain reservists.

Youngsters who sign up will have the chance to become professional soldiers and will receive a monthly stipend of between 2,000-3,000 lei.

“Once they have tried out the Army and seen what it is, some will find it’s a good fit for them and will want to stay on,” he said.

“We will recruit some of them and they will become permanent members of the Army. We will offer them the perspective of becoming professional military if they are suitable and want to remain,” he added.

There are two draft laws, one called the defense law and the other, preparedness for the population, he said. The ministry is currently getting signatures and approvals from relevant institutions.

Mosteanu also met his Ukrainian Defense Minister Denîs Şmîhal this week, said:

“We spoke about Ukraine’s security and the peace we all want, about the European future of out region and what we can build together after the war,” the Romanian minister said in a Facebook post.

”Ukraine’s fight is a fight for independence and sovereignty of its country and at the same time, a fight for our common values.”
