Romania reports a drop in new coronavirus cases, but deaths stay high

Romania reported 1,014 news cases of coronavirus, a drop compared to recent daily figures, while 45 people succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, more than the previous two days.

Some 4.75% of the 21,289 people tested came out positive which was the lowest percentage of positive tests since July 25.

Bucharest reported 135 new cases on Tuesday, more than any other area in Romania, followed by the northeastern county of Vaslui where 69 new infections were confirmed. There have been outbreaks in that county, including at the county hospital there.

Prahova county, which is a popular tourist area in the Carpathian Mountains registered 49 new cases on Tuesday.

The latest figures take the total of coronavirus cases to 72,208.

There are currently 479 patients being treated in intensive care units.

Forty-five people with the virus died in the past day, of which 31 were men and 14 women. Of those, 43 had underlying health conditions.

Two people in their 40s died and seven in the fifties, 11 in their 60s,  17 in their 70s and eight people older than 80.

There are 9,600 people with the virus in self-isolation at hyome, and 5,650 in institutionalized isolation.

Nearly 27,000 people are in quarantine at home.
