Romania reports a record 1,415 cases of Covid-19 in the past day

Romania reported a record 1,415 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday and 43 deaths.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 485 patients being treated in intensive care units and nearly 7,400 Covid-19 patients in hospital.

Some 22,600 tests were carried out in the last 24 hours, of which 6.23% came out positive, an almost identical rate as Tuesday.

Romania has now reported a total of 65,177 cases of novel coronavirus and 2,807 deaths.

Twenty-five men and 18 women who had the virus died from Tuesday to Wednesday, of which one was in their 20s.

Another was in their 40s and four people in their 50s and 15 in their 60s also died. All but one had pre-existent health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, obesity and heart problems. Men and elderly people are the most vulnerable to the virus which first appeared in China last year.

Bucharest had 174 new cases in the past 24 hours more than any other place, while the northeast county of Vaslui reported an alarming 123 new infections a jump of 12.3% since Tuesday.

Cases soared in the poor northeastern county after an big outbreak at a social center in the county town of Husi  over the weekend which infected dozens. There were also cases of people contracting the virus after they took a vacation at the Black Sea.

Since the pandemic reached Romania in late February, more than 31,000 people have recovered from the virus and about 7,000 people with no symptoms have been discharged from hospital.
