Romania reports more than 19,000 Covid-19 cases, setting new record

Romania has posted 19,105 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, setting a new record for the East European country.

The Strategic Communication Group said Thursday even without final figures for the day, the old record in October had been surpassed. October was the worst month for Covid-19 cases and fatalities. More deaths were recorded than in any other month in Romania’s history, outside wartime.

Romania is in the grip of the fifth wave of the pandemic. The new Omicron strain is more contagious but generally less lethal than the Delta strain.

There were 39 Covid-19 deaths in the last day, authorities said. Hospitalizations remain relatively low even as virus numbers shoot up.

The incidence rate increased to 7.15 per 1,000 in the capital, shooting up from 6.69 the previous day. The rate is calculated over a two-week rolling period.

Final data will be released later Thursday.
