Romania reported 16,760 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, the biggest single-day figure in three months.

The number of new infections was approaching the record high of 18,863 daily cases seen on October 19, the Strategic Communication Group said.

Hospitalizations are still relatively low with the Omicron variant fueling the fifth wave. The latest strain is more contagious but generally less severe.

Some 4,218 were receiving hospital treatment on Tuesday of which 487 are in intensive care, according to official data.

Sixty-five people died of the virus within the last 24 hours, up from 17 the day before.

Romania remains the second-least vaccinated European Union member with under 41% of the population fully immunized.  Only Bulgaria has a lower vaccine uptake.

Distrust or state institutions and vaccine disinformation have led to vaccine hesitancy.

At the height of the fourth wave in October, Romania reported more deaths in a month than any other month except for wartime.

The virus has killed almost 60,000 people.
