Romania has scrambled two F-16 fighter aircraft following Russia’s massive drone attack on Ukraine, the defense ministry said.
Russian drones did not violate Romanian airspace, the ministry said.
“On the night of September 9 to 10, the MApN’s radar surveillance systems detected a group of aerial drones in the area of the Ukrainian town of Valcov, on the border with Romania. Two F-16 fighter aircraft of the Romanian Air Force took off at 00:59 from the 86th Air Base in Feteşti for research missions,” the ministry said.
It cam as Poland said it has shot down Russian drones that violated its airspace during a bombardment of Ukraine.
Warsaw said early Wednesday that it and its NATO allies had shot down Russian drones that violated Polish airspace in what it called an “act of aggression” as Russia launched aerial attacks on Ukraine.
Warsaw’s Chopin Airport suspended flights for several hours, citing the closure of airspace due to military operations.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that early indications suggest the drone incident on Poland was intentional
At Ro-Alert message was sent to residents in the northern area of Tulcea County which borders southern Ukraine at 01:27 Wednesday.
“We dud not detect any drone penetrating the national airspace. At 02:35 the signal to stop the air alert was transmitted, and the aircraft returned to … base,” the ministry said,
The defense ministry said that it is maintaining “a high level of vigilance at all times and ensures strict surveillance of the national air, sea and land space.”
“We are in permanent contact with our allies, we exchange operational information in real time and we act firmly to guarantee the security of Romania and NATO’s eastern flank,” the statement said.
