Romanian basketball coach Marius Coman has died in a road accident involving his team bus which was on its way to a competition at the Black Sea, CSM Oradea confirmed. He was just 23.

The talented young coach died Sunday on the highway from Bucharest to Constanta, his team said Monday.

Several staff members and members of the under-14 team were injured when a tire blew on their bus on the way to the babybasketball, Under-10 competition in the resort of Costinesti. Two minors were hospitalized with serious injuries after the bus toppled into a ditch when its tire exploded.

In April, Coman helped the western Romanian city of Oradea to win the national championship. He began his career as junior player in his hometown of Sighetu Marmației and went on to a coaching career.

“With pain in our hearts we say goodbye to Marius Coman, who was a part of the CSM Oradea technical staff,” the team said in a Facebook post.

“Not long ago we were congratulating him for his medals from the U14 team and we were making plans with him for the future of Oradea. Now, sadly, he left us much too soon after yesterday’s horrible accident.”

The Oradea senior team was recently named among the clubs participating in the Qualification Rounds for a spot in the 2025-26 Regular Season, Eurohoops reported.
