Senior Romanian-German journalist Robert Schwartz has been nominated to head Romania’s public radio station, the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company (SRR).
Schwartz, 69, who worked for Deutsche Welle for 30 years and headed its office from 2000-2020, also received the Order of Cultural Merit in the rank of Commander for his contribution to Romanian-German relations, the Save Romanian Union party said in a press release.
Parliament will vote on the proposal on Tuesday.
Born in 1956 in Sibiu, he graduated German Studies at the University of Bucharest and begab his career working as a stringer for the German editorial offices of the Romanian Radio and Television when he was a student.
He worked as a teacher and in 1990 he was the first post-revolution director of the German High School in Bucharest.
He settled in Germany in 1991 and joined Deutsche Welle the next year working his way up to the position of director of the Romanian language department. Between 2020 and 2023, he coordinated the DW project ‘Sinti and Roma in Europe’, and after his retirement in 2023 he continued to work as a freelance journalist.
He is a member of important academic and cultural organizations, and in 2023 he was elected president of the German-Romanian Society in Berlin,” a press release from the Save Romanian Union which nominated him said.
The party said its nomination was “a firm option for professionalism, international experience and competence in the media, culture and public administration fields.”
By proposing personalities with a solid professional profile, USR conveys its commitment to support an independent, credible management oriented towards the modernization of public radio and television services, as well as towards strengthening their democratic role in society,” USR representatives said.
