The Romanian Government’s special representative of the for the Promotion of Remembrance Policies, Combating Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia, Alexandru Muraru, has asked authorities „to withdraw the monument dedicated to the ‘heroes’ of the former Securitate” from the Heroes’ Cemetery in Pitesti, „the city where the greatest abuses from the communist regime of the political police took place”.

„Erecting a funeral monument in honor of former Securitate officers and placing it in the Heroes’ Cemetery in Pitesti is an action that goes against the commitments assumed by Romania as a member state of the European Union”, he stated.

„Communist totalitarianism was condemned in the European Parliament in 2009. Thus, the crimes against humanity and the countless violations of human rights committed by the communist regimes were condemned. The Romanian Parliament, in 2006, through the Report of the Presidential Commission for the Analysis of the Communist Dictatorship in Romania, stated clearly and unequivocally that the Romanian Exile expresses its consternation and regret in a statement regarding the attempt to turn  former Securitate officers into heroes. We request the removal of the monument dedicated to the ‘heroes’ of the former Securitate, which was erected in the Heroes’ Cemetery in Pitesti, and the delimitation of State Institutions from this totalitarian manifestation.”

He added that the Securitate was an „arm” of the Communist Party that kept a „kleptocratic, abusive, dictatorial and criminal elite” in power.

„Any attempt to relativize the role played by the Securitate is an affront to the victims of the communist regime and takes us out of the European orbit, where the preservation and consolidation of a culture of memory towards those who suffered from totalitarian regimes is sacrosanct”, he said.

According to him, it is a historically documented fact that the security officers and from other units of the Ministry of the Interior acted directly to supervise and intimidate the population. A monument dedicated to the „heroes” of the former Security Service was recently unveiled at the Heroes’ Cemetery in Pitesti, which led to a major scandal.

The event, organized by the Association of Reserve and Retired Military Cadres from the Romanian Intelligence Service, brought together dozens of reserve military cadres of SRI, SIE and the Directorate of Military Intelligence from several Romanian counties. The demonstration sparked outrage among the representatives of the Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of the Romanian Exile.

The Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of the Romanian Exile expresses its consternation and regret in a statement regarding the attempt to heroize the former Security Service workers. We request the removal of the monument dedicated to the „heroes” of the former Security, which was erected in the Heroes’ Cemetery in Pitesti, and the delimitation of State Institutions from this totalitarian manifestation.
