Romanian opposition leader, George Simion, has been accused of trying to ‘sabotage’ his country by peddling conspiracy theories during a private visit to the United States.
Alexandru Muraru, the deputy chairman of the ruling Liberal Party, said that Mr. Simion, who lost the May 2025 presidential runoff is trying to convince members of Congress that the canceling of Romania’s 2024 presidential elections over Russia meddling was in fact ‘a coup d’etat’ against democracy.
Simion heads the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party which is in first place in opinion polls, while Mr. Muraru who criticized him is also the brother of Romania’s Ambassador to the United States, Andrei Muraru.
“George Simion went to the United States …. as a saboteur of Romania’s interests. The AUR leader walks through the halls of the US Congress, waving a filing file pompously called ‘Report on the coup d’état in Romania 2024-2025″. It is the absolute definition of conspiracy delusion: while Romania is making huge efforts for economic stability and strengthening its Euro-Atlantic profile, Simion goes to our strategic partner to accuse his own country using blatant lies, inventing imaginary dictatorships simply to justify his domestic political failure.”
“The climax of this grotesquely ridiculous visit was the moment when George Simion, the self-proclaimed “champion of sovereignty,” turned into a geopolitical waiter at a private party, happily cutting a Greenland-shaped cake decorated with the U.S. flag. The gesture is not only a monumental diplomatic blunder against a NATO ally, Denmark, but also the ultimate proof of the AUR imposture: how can you claim to defend the sovereignty of nations when you celebrate the erasure of another people’s borders?
“Today he divides Greenland on disposable plates to beg for attention, tomorrow, according to the same cynical logic, he could accept the Russian flag on the map of the Republic of Moldova. For Simion, sovereignty is just a slogan of the internal market, while on the move it becomes a simple tool for serving foreign expansionist fantasies, demonstrating that his opportunism has no limits, not even geographical,” he said.
“This approach is not only ridiculous, it is anti-national. George Simion has only one objective: to undermine the confidence of investors and foreign partners in Romanian democracy, hoping that the economic chaos will bring him votes.”
“ He is a demagogue who doesn’t care about Romania, but only about his own ego and Facebook likes. … America, the bastion of democracy, instinctively rejects the extremism that Simion represents. It’s a bitter irony: Simion claims to defend democracy with false reports, while institutions that monitor anti-Semitism and extremism point to him as a real danger. I ask George Simion to immediately stop this masquerade. U.S. congressmen don’t need bad movie scripts about coups, and Romania doesn’t need a political tourist who denigrates his country to victimize himself.”
He said he would initiate the referral to the Legal Committee of the Chamber of Deputies for the analysis of the legal and constitutional implications of Simion’s activities during his visit to the US.
