Romanian police investigate three men on suspicion of trafficking Ukrainians

Romanian police say they are investigating Romanian three men on suspicion of trafficking Ukrainian nationals who have fled the war in their country.

Police chased a car on Monday night after the driver refused to stop during a routine check.

The driver then abandoned the car and took refuge in a  nearby house. Police discovered six Ukrainian men in the car.

They were taken to the Suceava police headquarters where it was established that they had not completed the entry formalities.

Ukrainian men aged 18-60 have been banned from leaving the country after martial law was imposed following the Russian invasion.

The six men have demanded protection from the Romanian state and applied for asylum.

Border police officials have identified two other Romanian citizens who were involved in the alleged trafficking, they said. The case has been handed over to prosecutors.

Romanian police said thee car was flagged down on Monday evening in Suceava county near the border, G4Media reported.

Romanian police have increased border controls along the 615-kilometer border with Ukraine since  the conflict began on Feb. 24.
