President Klaus Iohannis has called for greater protection of the Romanian-speaking minority in Ukraine and for the Romanian language to be known by its proper name there.

The Romanian president brought up the issue on Tuesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a phone conversation about the Ukraine crisis.
Romania has offered Ukraine support in the current crisis and help in its future goals of NATO and EU membership.
But a sticking point between the neighbors is the treatment of the Romanian ethnic minority and a 2017 language law. The law has also caused friction with Russia and Hungary which have large minorities in Ukraine.
Cool relations
However, Romania has an advantage. It has cool relations with Moscow and enjoys better ties with Ukraine than either Russia or Hungary.
Romanian officials say there are up to 400,000 ethnic Romanian and Moldovans of Romanian descent living in Ukraine, mainly near the borders of both countries.
The Romanian president spent “a significant amount of the call trying to solve the problems of the Romanian minority” his office said.
Mr. Iohannis in particular called for the Romanian language to be recognized by its proper name, not “Moldovan” a Soviet-era formula. In April 2021 Ukraine promised to fix the name.
„President Iohannis underlined the necessity of getting concrete results as soon as possible,” his office said.
Solutions
Mr Zelensky said he understood Romania’s position adding he was open and willing to find solutions, a statement said.
Both countries are agreed they were concerned about “worrying security developments in the immediate vicinity of Ukraine and in the Black Sea region.”
Mr. Iohannis said he “appreciated Ukraine’s responsible behavior in avoiding raising tensions.”

Romania and Ukraine established relations 30 years ago in the wake of the breakup of the Soviet Union.
