Romanian tennis champion Simona Halep tests positive for coronavirus

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep has tested positive for the new coronavirus, she said Saturday.

The tennis champ tweeted: “Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that I tested positive for COVID-19.”

The 29-year-old said she was self-isolating in her home in the Black Sea port of Constanta and only had mild symptoms.

“I am … recovering well from mild symptoms. I feel good… we will get through this together .”

In August, she won her 21st WTA title, at the 2020 Prague Open, where she defeated Elise Mertens in the final. She went on to win the Italian Open in September, beating an injured Karolina Pliskova in the final.

At the 2020 French Open, she was the favorite and won her first three matches in straight-sets, until losing to Iga Swiatek in the fourth round by only winning three games.

As a result, she missed out on retaining the No. 1 ranking

She has been ranked world No. in  singles twice between 2017 and 2019. In total, she has been No. 1 for 64 weeks, according to the WTA.
