Romanian woman, son and his wife throw themselves into river over homeless despair

A Romanian woman, her son and his wife threw themselves into a river in an apparent suicide bid on Friday.

The three were apparently in a state of despair about being homeless.

Health officials were unable to save the older woman who was 77 and her 47-year-old  daughter-in-law.

A 55-year-old man was being treated in hospital for hypothermia.

The three hurled themselves into the Borcea river, a tributary of the Danube in southeastern Romania earlier Friday, News.ro reported.

Spokesman for the emergency services in Călăraşi county, Ovidiu Tătăranu, said  the three were spotted by locals. Firefighters intervened Friday afternoon to pull them from the water.

”The intervention teams arrived quickly and extracted the two women who were in cardio arrest. They could not be resuscitated, and were declared dead by a doctor of the ambualance services. The man was pulled out of the water and given first aid and taken to the emergency unit of the county hospital. He had hypothermia,” Ovidiu Tătăranu said.

The three were homeless and lived on park benches in the town of Calarasi, local sources said.
