Romania’s political monsters have stepped into their roles

In the case of the Putinist ‘sovereigntists’ in this country, the father of this paradox of garbage and mother of all lies looks like this:

  • They declare themselves to be true Romanians, they wrap themselves in the ‘tricolor’ (Romanian flag) as if it were a beach towel; they ostentatiously wave the flag wherever there are public and media exposure opportunities; they spit out patriotic verses and words. At the same time, they serve Russia’s agenda and interests from all positions_ Romania’s biggest enemy in the last hundred years, today and in the years to come.
  • They declare themselves to be adepts of total freedom of expression, claim there is  a dictatorship in Romania with a stubbornness that you suspect to be the result of either too many pills or medication taken without a doctor’s prescription. At the same time, they view Putin’s Russia as the model for Romania and the whole of Europe. They see censorship in Bucharest and in the EU in general, but don’t see it in Moscow. Just as they don’t see the political prisons there.
  • They call for peace in Ukraine and for friendship between the Russian and Romanian peoples. But they applaud the Russian aggressor in Ukraine and applaud the Kremlin terrorist for the war and ethnic cleansing unleashed there.
  • They walk with God-So much God in their mouths that  their oral cavity is dehydrated. They parade ostentatious crosses – sometimes around their necks, sometimes raised aloft to the skies, sometimes displayed on hats (the famous case of Gigi Becali’s buttocks). They go to monasteries, they enter churches, they parade religious relics, they show up with various godless priests, Some go on an all-out fast when they have a success. At the same time, they practice non-stop self-righteousness, pure hypocrisy, sinful speech, reprehensible deeds, aggression, and general hatred of others and stigmatization of those who are different. They raise their fists in the air and never turn the other cheek.
  • They present themselves as anti-system, pure virgins in the public and political space, loyal servants of the national interest. On the other hand the most visible ones come from the ‘system’.
  • They make honesty, transparency and living for the benefit of the community landmarks of their personality and the values that animate them. On the other hand, they have a splendid fauna of thugs, and dirty characters, and their vocabulary and non-verbal language reek of the vocabulary and gestures of the underworld.

Images of the first day of the new Parliament were telling. Romanians are in real time reaping what many Romanians have just horribly sown at the ballot box: weeds, weeds, only weeds, and finally, a desert!

SOS President Diana Șoșoacă walks with the thug after her through the halls of Parliament and silences journalists like a dog. And the thug is happy because he has the freedom to behave how he wants.

Admittedly, the momentary excitement of the thug suggests that he would have taken a bite but he hadn’t been given the green light; he hadn’t been shown the bone.

But, rest (un)assured, there’s still time.

The head of the POT (a small nationalist party), who used to be in AUR(the biggest nationalist party), snubs the press in Parliament’s hallowed halls, with the skill of an  autocrat in the making.

The recent images of comrade Anamaria Gavrilă are the stuff  f literature: she walks on the marble floors of Ceausescu’s House of the People, the way the dictator walked wherever he went.

What dreadful times they were, the years of the original Ceausescu regime, the years when the mother of the head of the POT lacked powdered milk and decent diapers for her infant (born 1983), had no hot water, often no electricity, and toys and oranges were only to be found at Christmas, and the next time, the next Christmas.

And what a terrible thought that those dreadful times threaten to return.  And lo and behold, they are returning spectacularly, astride a white stallion of sovereignty cultivated by the Russians, but built on ignorance, poor education, on amnesia, on a total lack of common sense, on cesspit morals.

Let’s pay attention to one thing: when even Antena 3 journalists don’t feel safe in this country, it’s a sign that social stability is hanging by a thread.  The truth is painful and the there’s something of a paradox here: in the last decade and a half, Antena 3 has itself worked with dedication to pervert the country where today its journalists (and so many others in the last few weeks) no longer feel safe.

After the parliamentary elections, the monsters took on their new roles. Their mouths are watering for the presidential elections.

Not much more is needed for Romania to implode under the pressure of the alliance between Putinists and thugs.

We still need:

  • For Romanians to deliver the Presidency into their hands.
  • In the democratic camp, for betrayals to appear and/or stupidity or infantilism prevail.
  • That prosecutors should continue  not to do their jobs as they have done in recent  years:  by not punishing hate speech, verbal and physical aggression, mobsters, anti-Semitism, the cult of the Legionnaires.
  • That the competent national security state institutions  should be taken again by surprise by the hybrid war tactics employed by Russia, by the internal weaknesses of the Romanian state.

The new Parliament looks no different from the new Romania, let’s be honest! And the new Romania is simply the natural extension of the old one, the gnarled and painful phalanx created by an aberrant metabolism.

The cause is not (yet) definitively lost, but to win requires efforts, honesty, imagination and intelligence in large doses, of a quality that hasn’t been seen in Romania in the last 35 years.

We have come adrift, and this can lead to totalitarian.
