President Nicusor Dan said Tuesday that he does not rule out snap elections as Romania’s political crisis, now more than two months old, remains unresolved.
The Romanian president added he was not in favor of the option claiming that the outcome would not significantly alter the composition of Parliament.
Dan appeared on Pro TV News where he was asked whether he would dissolve Parliament triggering early elections if parties fail to reach an agreement for the formation of a new government.
The current crisis started when one of the coalition partners, the Social Democrats teamed up with the nationalist AUR party on May 5 to oust the government of Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
Romania’s parties have failed to agree on a new government which is capable of mustering a Parliamentary majority,
“This scenario (Eds: of early elections) has been discussed a little bit. It’s not something I want (but) I don’t rule it out. It’s not something I want and I think it’s very unlikely at this point, because it wouldn’t make any sense<” he said
Asked what would be the exceptional conditions that would lead to early elections, Nicusor Dan answered:
“A prolonged deadlock or a long time, with no hope of resolution. I believe that there are still resources to find a formula that can get a majority in Parliament,” he said.
Op-Ed: Snap elections are getting more likely and the Romanian president knows it
