Romania’s “right-wing bloc” incoming?

The president of Romania’s National Liberal Party (one of Romania’s two leading parties) has mentioned a “right-wing bloc” as a potential part of his electoral campaign for the position of Romania’s President from the fall onwards.

We are continuing the negotiations this week with the right-wing parties. The right-wing bloc is possible with joint lists [for the parliamentary elections] to include the Popular Movement Party (PMP), Right Force Party, and REPER [besides PNL]. We can negotiate with USR for the second round [of the presidential elections] to support us,” Ciucă said.

What this means is actually a shift towards the USR party, which is at best a moderate right party, and a move away from the Social Democrat party, which the Liberal party has been in a coalition with up to now.

“The PNL should do a little cleaning and sanitization [within their party] because now they cannot separate themselves from the Social Democrats (PSD). But I know that in the Liberal Party, there are people who know that this is not the right way, neither for them nor the country”, said Georgia Lasconi, Ciucă’s competitor for the presidency, from the USR party herself.

Specifics on the idea of the right-wing bloc are hazy – for instance, there has been no mention of AUR, Romania’s far-right party.

At any rate, the Social Democrat party is way ahead in opinion polls, and the counties with Romania’s most active voters are historically strongly Social Democrat.
