Seventeen flu deaths in Romania in last week

Seventeen people died of influenza in the last week in Romania, taking the death toll this winter to 57, according to the National Institute of Public Health.

There were 8,499 cases of clinical influenza registered nationwide in the last week, significantly more than the previous week when there were 6,287 cases and  1.6 times higher than the average of the last five winters when there was an average of 5,436.

Cases were reported all around Romania, with the most registered in Bucharest (1,204) followed by  Constanta (837) and Prahova (753) counties.

In the week of January 19 – 25, the following respiratory diseases were registered:

  • 104,973 cases of respiratory infections (clinical influenza, acute respiratory tract infections and pneumonia) – 8.7% more cases compared to the previous week (96,582), but 21.4% less compared to the same week of the previous season (133,635).
  • 8,499 cases of clinical influenza nationwide, compared to 6,287 registered in the previous week and 10,950 in the same week of the previous season. The number of cases is 1.6 times higher than the average of the last 5 seasons (5,436).
  • 61 cases of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), 19 more than the previous week and 57 more than the same period of the previous season.
  • 328 cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza (56 with influenza virus AH3, 8 with influenza virus AH1 and 264 with unsubtyped influenza A virus).

Since the beginning of the winter, some 1,235 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza have been reported, of which:

In all confirmed cases with influenza virus AH3, with samples sequenced at the Cantacuzino Institute, subclass K was detected.

In total, 57 deaths in people confirmed with influenza virus were recorded in this cold season:

The deaths occurred in the following age groups:

  • 1 in the 5-14 years age group;
  • 3 who were 15-49 years old;
  • 6 who were  50-64 years old;
  • 47 of people older than 65.

The INSP said that 1,293,815 influenza vaccinations were registered in the National Electronic Register of Vaccinations (RENV) until Jan. 25.
