Russia’s Shiveluch volcano erupted on Sunday, spewing plumes of ash 5 kilometres into the sky over the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula and triggering a “code red” warning for aircraft for a short period of time.
Shiveluch is one of Russia’s most active volcanoes.
It began to sputter shortly after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Kamchatka’s east coast early Sunday.
Another, even more potent earthquake may ensue, judging by a massive ash cloud hovering over the volcano.
The ash cloud stretched more than 490km east and southeast of the volcano, says the Russian Institute of Volcanology.
