Two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft were scrambled early Sunday after Russia carried out new drone attacks overnight near the border with Romania, the defense ministry said.

Romanian acted after the Ukrainian Air Force sent warning messages that attack drones were moving over the Black Sea towards the Ukrainian  town of Vylkove, across the Danube from Periprava in Romania.

It was not immediately clear what happened to the Russian drones but no Romanian airspace was violated.

“Following the detection of a group of radar signals, 22 km northeast of Valcove, the National Military Command Center notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations regarding the establishment of measures to alert the population in the north of Tulcea County, a RO-Alert message being sent at 02:16,”a ministry press release said.

The Typhoon fighters of the British Air Force from the 86th Borcea Air Base, located in the Air Police Combat Service, took off at 02.19, to monitor the situation.

No unauthorized penetrations into the national airspace were reported, and the air alarm ended at 3:37 a.m, the ministry said.

“MApN informs in real time the allied structures about the situations generated by these attacks and permanently maintains contact with them,” the release also reads.
