VIDEO | Drone attack on the Ukrainian port of Reni, meters from Romania

Russia allegedly attacked the strategic Ukrainian port of Reni, a port on the Danube, close to the Romanian border which Ukraine is using to export grain after Moscow pulled out of a deal guaranteeing safe passage for exports across the Black Sea.

Images on social media on Monday taken from Romania showed a series of explosions at the port of Reni and anti-aircraft combat installations firing on what appeared to be kamikaze drones.

The strikes come after Russia refused to renew the Black Sea grain agreement last week. Farmers in the Odesa region are sending their grain to the Danube river ports of Reni and Izmail after Russia began targeting Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

It is not yet clear the extent of the damage from the attacks, but it is clear that not all drones were intercepted by Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire.

The Ukrainian port of Reni, essential for transporting goods on the Danube, is about 13 kilometers from the Romanian Danube port of Galati.

„Russian forces continued to terrorize the Odessa region last night, launching a nearly four-hour attack with Shahed-136 kamikaze drones on port infrastructure on the Danube,” Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command said, Ukrinform reported.

The Ukrainians say at least three drones were shot down by air defenses, but another may have managed to break through the defenses and hit a grain depot, but did not specify exactly in which port this strike would have been.
