VIDEO | Partial solar eclipse visible from Romania

A partial solar eclipse began around noon in Romania on Tuesday, the head of the Vasile Urseanu  Astronomical Observatory said.

The Observatory warned the public not to try and view “the eclipse through sunglasses or other improvised methods because you may lose your sight.”

The maximum point will occur between 13.28 and 13.42, the Observatory said.

It is visible from across all of Romania, with the sun’s coverage being between 33 and 44%. Highest coverage will be in northeast Romania. The moon will begin to cover the Sun from the upper right.

A partial solar eclipse takes place when the moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth. It is not as dark outside during a partial eclipse as it is during a total eclipse, since the moon partially blocks the Sun’s light.

During a partial solar eclipse, the Sun will have a dark shadow covering some of its surface, giving it a crescent shape.

The solar eclipse of October 25 is visible from Europe, the Urals and Western Siberia, Central Asia, Western Asia, South Asia and from the north-east of Africa.

The greatest eclipse – with nearly seven-eighths of the sun’s diameter (86.2%) hidden – occurs at local sunset over the West Siberian Plain near the city of Nizhnevertovsk, one of the wealthiest cities in Russia.

The animation shows what the eclipse approximately looks like in Bucharest. Stages and times of the eclipse are outlined below. All times are local time (EEST) for Bucharest.
