Snow plow crews on Tuesday cleared snow across three counties in central Romania and gritted highways.

The Brasov Roads and Bridges Department said it had sent plows to the counties of Harghita, Covasna and Mures after a wintry spell brought early snow and ice to the area, News.ro reported.

”Winter has arrived in the center of the country! “ the department said. It dispatched 14 snow plows to the region and spread 45 tons of grit on major roads to prevent accidents.

Driving was hazardous in the area due to the poor weather, authorities said.

“We ask motorists to be aware and adapt their speed to the road conditions,” a statement said.

Road crews also sprinkled salt on the Transfăgărăşan highway_ a winding road through the mountains_ which it also snowed.

The capital was also hit by bad weather on Tuesday. Although there was no snow in Bucharest, which lies on a plain in southern Romania, it rained for much of the day. Temperatures fell to 6 C during the day after a high of 21 C on Monday.

It will dip  to freezing in Bucharest overnight Wednesday, forecasters said.
