Winter returns to Romania with a vengeance

Winter returned to Romania on Monday, placing its icy grip over much of the country.

Meteorologists announced a sharp drop in temperatures Monday morning with light snow in the capital and subzero temperatures.

The cold snap is expected to last until Wednesday morning and heavy snow of 10-15 centimeters in southern Romania will be accompanied by high winds causing snow drifts.

Meteorologists issued a yellow code warning for northeast Moldova region and eastern Transylvania and said temperatures would dip as low as -14C until Tuesday when the cold snap begins to lift

There will be heavy snow in Oltenia, in the southwest until Wednesday.

Across the country wind speed will intensify to  50 km/h and up to 90km/h in the Southern Carpathians causing blizzards.

“The temperatures will be below average outside the Carpathians and in central Romania,”  forecasters said.

The counties of Bacau, Botosani, Covasna, Galati, Harghita, Iasi, Neamt, Suceava, Vrancea and Vaslui are concerned.

Also, there is a yellow code of strong wind, until Tuesday afternoon, in the south of Banat.

“The wind will intensify with gust speeds generally of 50… 70 km/h, temporarily blizzarding snow. In the western extremity of the Southern Carpathians, especially at altitudes of over 1200 m, the gusts will exceed 70… 90 km/h, there will be a blizzard and reduced visibility,” the ANM said.
