Rostelecom — Russia’s biggest provider of digital services — has revealed that its underwater cable, which runs through the Baltic Sea, has been damaged.
This was caused by “external influence” — a vague term, which particularly raises suspicion that cables are deliberately being cut.
Finland’s Coast Guard confirmed that the cable was damaged in Finnish territorial waters and a Russian ship is currently working in the region to repair the cable.
Previously, disruptions had been reported in the connection of four telecommunications cables passing under the Baltic Sea.
The EstLink 2 electricity transmission link between Finland and Estonia has also been affected.
Russia has not provided additional details.
The Baltic Sea region has been on high alert after a string of outages affecting power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines between the Baltics and Sweden/Finland (believed to have been caused by ships dragging anchors across the seabed), leading to increased NATO surveillance, Reuters reports.
