Zelensky’s invitation for Trump to Ukraine leads to continued bickering

Yesterday, Volodymyr Zelensky publicly invited Donald Trump to see the devastation in Ukraine.

Trump gave mixed and erratic responses, both saying that Russia’s big recent attack on Sumy was a mistake (the deadliest yet, and on Palm Sunday), but has also said that it has been suggested to him that a visit would be a mistake.

Reading between the lines, one would assume that Putin, who has a remarkable sense of self-preservation, would have insinuated to Trump, who has already faced assassination attempts and narrowly survived, that it would put him in danger.

In response, Trump has expressed his frustration towards Ukraine: “You don’t start a war against someone 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles”.

He also blamed Putin for “millions of people dead” and of course, Joe Biden, for whom he has expressed disdain repeatedly.

“Millions of people dead because of three people. […] Let’s say Putin number one, let’s say Biden who had no idea what the hell he was doing, number two, and Zelensky.”

Therefore, he blamed Putin as instigator, and then blamed Zelensky for “always looking to purchase missiles”.

On Friday, US envoy to Russia travelled to St Petersburg, where he spent over four hours with Vladimir Putin discussing “aspects of a Ukrainian settlement”.
