11,000 infected with Covid-19 in Romania in last week as infections soar

The coronavirus is back in Romania, and health authorities are registered 11,000 cases in the last week compared to about 500 a week two months ago.

The increase in new cases of COVID-19 in Romania started again in mid-July and has risen continuously since August.

The health ministry shows that from September 11 to 17, more than 11,200 people infected with the coronavirus, 4,055 more cases than the previous week.

Some 967 patients were hospitalized, including 212. There were 18 Covid-related deaths in the last week, of which five were vaccinated.

Health authorities say Romania is facing a new wave of coronavirus, with new strains Eris and Pirola which are currently circulating in Europe.

Health Minister Alexandru Rafila said that for the time being, protective masks will not become mandatory. However, he recommended people with respiratory diseases to wear them, especially in public transport or in crowded spaces.
