After mild January, cold snap grips Romania

A cold snap descended on Romania on Sunday, weather service said, bringing snow,high winds and frigid temperatures.

Meteorologists said that from Sunday through Monday, northern Romania would get snow with the wintry weather affecting central Romania and the east and southeast on Monday.

In Maramures, northern and eastern Transylvania, northern and central Moldova can expect up to 5 cm of snow with up to 10 cm farther east. Other regions will be hit by rain and sleet and black ice is expected.

Wind of up to of 40 – 45 km/h are expected in the south and east  with gusts of 60 – 80 km/h in the Carpathian Mountains.

After a mild January, temperatures plunged below freezing in parts of Romania and the cold weather is expected to persist.

“The weather will be cold throughout the week, with high winds in the mountains and the east,” the National Weather Administration said.
