Adverse weather forecast across much of Romania through weekend

Severe weather has been forecast across much of Romania through the weekend. Possible transport, business, and utility disruptions are expected.

Severe weather is forecast across much of Romania through at least July 23. Severe weather warnings are in place for unstable weather conditions across central, northern, southern, and western regions through Saturday.

Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are forecast across parts of the country during the weekend, including eastern regions not currently under any warnings.

Strong wind gusts, lightning, and hail will likely accompany storms. Rainfall amounts of 2-5 cm in the space of a few hours are expected across the warning areas overnight Friday, as well as winds gusting up to 100 kph. Heavy downpours could trigger flooding in low-lying areas, and strong winds may cause property damage and power outages.

The Romanian National Meteorological Administration on Friday issued the following warnings:

  • Orange unstable weather warnings: Alba, Arad, northern Arges, Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Brasov, Caras-Severin, Cluj, Dolj, Gorj, Hunedoara, Maramures, Mehedinti, Mures, Satu Mare, Salaj, Sibiu, Timis, and Valcea counties.
  • Yellow unstable weather warnings: Central and southern Arges, Bacau, Botosani, Buzau, Covasna, Dambovita, Harghita, Iasi, Neamt, Olt, Prahova, Suceava, Teleorman, and Vrancea counties.

Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems.

Authorities could issue evacuation orders for flood-prone communities. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where severe weather impacts utility networks.

Severe weather could likely trigger flight delays and block regional rail lines.
