As Covid-19 cases surge in Romania, almost 150 children hospitalized

Some 141 children with Covid-19 were hospitalized for treatment on Sunday as the surge in cases continues.

The Strategic Communication Group reported 2,255 new cases on Sunday which is a high figure for Sunday when fewer tests are carried out. There were 29 Covid-19-related deaths. One of the people who died was 28.

The total death toll since the pandemic began now stands at 34,990, authorities said. More than 1.12 million people have been confirmed with the virus since Feb. 2020.

More than 33,000 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours giving a positivity rate of 6,79%, authorities said.

Bucharest had 233 new cases on Sunday and the southwestern Timis region had 167 cases. Cluj had 97 cases.

Ninety-two of Sunday’s cases were not tied to any one county or were people who live abroad.

Some 600 patients were in ICU, including nine children. There are currently just over 4,800 patients were being treated in hospital.

Cases have steadily risen in recent weeks. There have been more than 2,000 cases every day since Sept. 7.  Saturday’s figure of 2,648 was the highest since April 22.

Schools and kindergartens start the new school year on Monday. In areas where there are more than six cases per 1,000 inhabitants, there will be online lessons.
