Romanian pupils can now be sent out of a class for disruptive behavior while teachers will no longer be allowed to offer private tuition to their students.
There are some of the new rules that came into effect on Monday as some 3 million Romanian pupils and high-school students returned to school.
The education ministry announced the new measures last week with the new rules designed to give more authority to teachers_ as well as ensuring teachers don’t show favoritism to pupils who pay them for extra tuition.
President Klaus Iohannis who went to the opening ceremony at the Mihai Viteazul school in Bucharest said: ”Education is the foundation on which the future of a nation is built and teachers are the architects of this future.”
Under new rules, students who disrupt classes can be sent to another room, under the supervision of another teacher, empowering overwhelmed teachers and allowing other pupils to learn in a calm environment. In the same vein, students will be graded on their behavior for every class, rather than receive an overall grade for their behavior at the end of the year.
Parents arealso obliged to go to parent-teacher meetings organized by the school, and must ensure their children are properly dressed. Some schools have uniforms but schools can be lax at making sure students wear them.
Teachers are no longer allowed to tutor students they teach, a previously common practice which undermined confidence in the way teachers marked students they privately tutored.
There are no new subjects on this year’s curriculum, but the next school year,the “History of communism in Romania” will become compulsory for high school students and “History, slavery and deportation of Roma” will also be taught/
There is widespread ignorance about the communist era among the younger generations, while prejudice against Roma is also common.
The 2024-2025 school year will be 35 weeks and long and have five sessions.
For the twelfth grade, evening school and part-time school, the school year is 34 weeks and ends on June 6, 2025.
For the eighth grade, the school year is 35 weeks and ends on June 13, 2025.

Wednesday, January 8, 2025, to Friday, February 7, 2025,
– Monday, February 17, 2025, to Thursday, April 17, 2025;
-Monday, April 28, 2025, to June 6 or June 13, 2025;
– The next school year starts on Monday, September 8, 2025.
