Britain’s King Charles hosts Moldovan president at Christmas royal residence

Britain’s King Charles on Thursday hosted hosted President Maia Sandu of Moldova at his Sandringham Estate, giving the public a rare peek inside one of the royal family’s favorite residences.

Ms Sandu and and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India traveled the 160 kilometers north  of London for the visit.

The leaders shook hands for photos in the saloon, Sandringham House’s main reception room. A fireplace is seen in the background along with large plants placed throughout the room.

The Indian prime minister gifted the King a tree to be planted this autumn, inspired by the environmental initiative he launched, which encourages people to plant a tree in tribute to their mothers.

The British royal family typically spends Christmas and New Year’s at Sandringham. The tradition was started by the late Queen Elizabeth in 1988, and all her grandchildren grew up holidaying in Norfolk.

The Sandringham-Christmas connection dates back to 1957when the late monarch delivered her first ever televised Christmas message to the nation.
