Bucharest among most polluted places in Romania

The Romanian capital is one of the four most polluted areas in the country, an air quality monitoring network said.

Ilfov, which is north of the capital, the central county of Covasna and Iasi in northeast Romania also have high levels of PM10 particles, Airly said.

At the other end of the scale, Harghita in central Romania and Galaţi in eastern Romania have clean air.

Airly monitors air quality monitoring network in 18 Romanian cities. It has  78 air quality sensors in 18 cities all across Romania.

The fumes cause fine particles are known as PM2.5 and have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. They are a health hazard as they can be drawn further into the lungs than the coarser PM10 particles.

The World Health Organization recommends an average of 10 μg/m3. Romania  has 16.4 μg/m3, the worst in the 27-member bloc after Bulgaria and Poland.

The report assessed air quality from November 2020 to February 2021.

The Airly sensors reported a growth in several counties including Dolj in the south and Iaşi.

The mining industry, generating electric energy and food production are causes of pollution.
