Coronavirus cases move toward 15,000 in Romania, deaths near 900

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Romania climbed to 14,811 on Friday, and deaths stood at 898.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 312 news cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Some 232 patients are being treated in intensive care units.

More than 6,400 patients have recovered from the virus.

Some 237,280 tests have been conducted since the virus outbreak. Authorities increased testing in recent weeks.

The northern county of Suceava has 3,165 cases the highest number in Romania, and has reported 159 deaths, more than twice than in Arad, the next most affected county which has seen 70 deaths.

An outbreak at a hospital in Suceava led to rapid transmission at the facility and among the population. The city and surrounding area is currently under a strict lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus.

There are currently 14,382 patients in institutionalized quarantine and almost 21,000 in self-isolation at home, under medical supervision.
