Coronavirus cases stay high in Romania

Romania reported 1,318 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday and authorities said 48 people had succumbed to the virus in the last day.

The Strategic Communication Group said 26,059 tests were carried out in the past day, meaning just under 5% of those tested were positive, slightly lower than Thursday but in line with recent percentages.

Romania reported 1,504 case on Thursday the highest ever number of cases in a day.

In the past 24 hours, 48 people with Covid-19 died, 23 men and 25 women.

Two were in their 40s, five in their 50s, 13 in their 60s, 15 in their 70s, while 13 were older than 80.

All but one of the patients who died had underlying health issues such as kidney disease, heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

There are currently 497 patients with the coronavirus in intensive care units out of a total of 7,325 in hospital.

Bucharest had 159 new cases, more than anywhere else, followed by the northern county of Iasi with 89 cases. There were 78 new infections in the Prahova valley region, a hotspot not far from the capital which is popular with tourists who want to visit the Carpathian mountains.

There are some 9,000 people who gave tested positive for the virus in self-isolation at home and 5,700 in institutionalized isolation, authorities said.

Almost 31,000 people are in quarantine because they have come into contact with infected people.

More than 37,000 patients have recovered from the virus since it reached Romania in February.
