Coronavirus deaths pass 950 in Romania, and confirmed cases rise to 15,362

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Romania climbed to 15,362 on Sunday, and the death count rose to 952.

The Strategic Communication Group said 231 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

Some 242 patients are currently being treated for their symptoms in intensive care units.

More than 7,000 patients have recovered from the virus since the outbreak started in March.

Some 257,000 tests have been conducted since the virus outbreak. Authorities increased testing in recent weeks.

The northern county of Suceava has 3,213 cases the highest number in Romania, with 5 cases pe 1,000 residents. There have been  165 COVID-19 deaths in the county, more than twice than in Arad, the next most affected county which has seen 74 deaths.

An outbreak at a hospital in Suceava led to rapid transmission at the facility and among the population. The city and surrounding area is currently under a strict lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus.

There are currently 14,400 patients in institutionalized quarantine and almost 20,000 in self-isolation at home, under medical supervision.
