Covid-19 spread accelerates in Romania, as 6% of tests confirm positive for virus

Romania’s coronavirus spike continued Monday, with 246 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in the past 24 hours.

While the number of new infections was lower than recent days, only 4,044 tests were carried out, far fewer than last week.

Monday’s infection rate is just over 6%, more than double previous days. It was the highest percentage of cases to tests since May 4, when the ratio of positive cases was 9.3%.

Eleven patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, The Strategic Communication Group said. The death toll stands at 1,523.

The total number of cases reached 24,291.

There are 195 patients being treated in intensive care, the same number as Sunday.

More than 17,000 people have recovered from the disease.

Authorities have carried out 630,400 tests so far.

There are some 1.250 people in institutionalized quarantine with another 72,000 people in self-isolation at home.
