Romania’s deadly fourth wave continued its relentless march on Tuesday, with record deaths and infections.

Authorities said 561 people with Covid-19 had died in the past 24 hours and there were 18,883 new cases, both all-time highs.

There were 1,805 patients being treated in intensive care units. Authorities say there are no more beds available in Romanian hospitals for Covid-19 patients in ICUs.

Bucharest reported 2,100 new infections in the past day, the highest anywhere in the country. Iasi in northeast Romania and the Black Sea port of Constanta both had in excess of 600 cases.

The national infection rate has now risen to 9.4 cases per 1,000 people. The capital has an infection rate of 16,44 per 1,000 and green vaccine passes are required in restaurants and some public institutes.

Romania has the second lowest vaccine uptake in the European Union after Bulgaria. About one-third of the adult population has received a single dose.

So far, at least six million people have received at least one dose of a vaccine.
