Dinamo Bucharest relegated for 1st time in its 74-year history

Dinamo Bucharest has been relegated for the first time in its 74-year history after a 1-1 draw at home with Universitatea Cluj on Sunday evening.

Dinamo, which has been in the first league since it was founded in 1948, lost 0-2 to  Universitatea in the first round of the play-off.

Head coach Dušan Uhrin Jr said „It is hard to believe… I am very sad and disappointed; I thought we’d get over this obstacle and remain in the first league.”

„I am also to blame,” he said. „The atmopshere in the dressing room is very unpleasant; qwe’re all down.”

Romanian soccer journalist tweeted that the relegation was the result of „15 years of madness, errors and incompetence.”

Universitatea Cluj, which ended the season in third place in the second league play-offs, returns to the first league after a break of seven years.

Dinamo, which finished 8th place in the playouts, is the second most titled club in League I, with 18 titles and 13 cups.

The historic Bucharest club was on the brink of relegation last year, until soccer authorities increased the Romanian League to 16 teams, which saved Dinamo for the 2020-21 season.

At the time, authorities said the number of clubs was increased, ostensibly to due to difficulties caused by the pandemic.
