Romanian President Nicusor Dan has received a letter from US President Donald Trump inviting Romania to become a member of the Board of Peace for the Gaza Strip.
There has been no word on what Dan’s response was.
The controversial initiative is part of the US administration’s plans to create a larger international body for mediating global conflicts, under the leadership of President Donald Trump.
The Board of Peace will address issues such as strengthening governance, regional relations, reconstruction, attracting investment, financing, and mobilizing capital for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. It is part of the second phase of Trump’s peace plan to resolve the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
In a brief message posted on social media, President Dan reacted to the rising tension between the United States and its European partners related to Greenland.
“I am deeply concerned by the escalation in public statements between transatlantic partners and allies regarding recent developments. We have to resume talking directly to each other, at the appropriate diplomatic levels,” Dan wrote on X.
Trump has threatened tariffs of up to 25% on products from eight European countries, “up to the total sale of Greenland”.
“Starting February 1, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will be subject to a 10% surcharge on goods sent to the United States,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Eight European countries then issued a joint declaration of solidarity with Greenland.
“As NATO members, we are committed to strengthening security in the Arctic, in the common transatlantic interest,” Finland, France, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Sweden said in a joint statement with Denmark. “Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty,” the statement said.
