Eight children with Covid-19 are hospitalized at the Grigore Alexandrescu Children’s Hospital in Bucharest, Diana Antăluţă, an infectious diseases doctor, told News.ro

Five children are in intensive care, with severe forms of the illness she said on Tuesday.

The youngest is a three day-old baby girl with no underlying health issues, and the oldest 17. Apart from the baby, all the other children have complications.

“In the last two weeks, there have started to be more Covid-19 cases. I can’t forecast what will happen as it depends on a lot of variables,” she said.

Doctors have noticed that children that are now getting hospital treatment are affected with breathing problems, while in the past most youngsters had had digestive problems.

Specialists are advising parents to vaccinate children over 12 and to also make sure that they themselves have had jabs.

„We have children with respiratory problems, coughs, a temperature, runny noses. …. Parents come when they feel they can’t cope with the children’s fever and cough,” she added.

“There are many things to do. … Firstly, children have to be vaccinated,” she said. ”It is well documented that children that have been inoculated rarely get infected.”

She said the progress of children in intensive care was “unpredictable”.

“Doctors are doing everything to save them and are adapting treatment depending on various factors.”

She said there were 13 beds for children with SARS-CoV-2 at the hospital which is in downtown Bucharest.
