A violent storm ripped through the Romanian capital and other regions overnight Wednesday, killing one, uprooting trees, flooding roads and even causing a flight to divert.
Dozens of homes and vehicles were damaged and a man died when a tree fell on the car with him inside, emergency services officials said.
In Bucharest alone, emergency services received 3,000 calls for help, media reported and several subway stations were flooded.
Outside the capital, the storm caused damage in 60 towns and villages. One person was killed when a tree fell on their vehicle in a village outside the capital.
Police and firefighters were deployed in the capital and across several counties for a clean-up operation. They evacuated flooded homes, cleared up branches and other debris.
The storm came on top of the hottest day of the year with 40 degrees Celsius registered in the first two days of the week, which led to higher electricity consumption for ACs and and raising electricity prices.
Authorities issued new yellow and orange weather alerts for storm and high temperatures between 31-34 degrees Celsius and even higher in northwest Romania.
